Mac slammed the phone down on the desk. No one had seen Larry anywhere. He hadn’t shown up at any of his old hangouts, according to Mac’s friends in Dallas. Neither had anyone noticed him around Riverbend. Where could the guy be hiding?

He checked his watch and found that it was about time to head home. Mason’s trial had taken an early recess, and he was supposed to be home by six. They had talked and were going to take Beth out to eat. They had decided to wait until the weekend to go dancing. Mason had one more day left that week for the trial, and he needed to be at his best.

Connie walked into his office with a pile of paperwork. He groaned but nodded when she started to walk back out.

“Come on in, Connie. What do you need?”

“I have the reports from yesterday ready. Do you want to look at them now or in the morning?”

“Anything interesting or unusual that I might need to look at tonight?”

“Well, Mrs. Caskill says there are aliens camping out in the woods behind her house. The Jameses are fighting again, and Jared and Quade reported a stolen cow.”

“Mrs. Caskill has aliens on the brain. Last month they were filming her house from the trees across the street. Any bloodshed on the Jameses?”

“No. Mostly name-calling.”

“Who’s handling the cow? Jared and Quade don’t usual report something like a lost cow.”

“Isn’t lost. Someone broke into their barn and stole the cow. They were keeping it there because it had a bad cut on its shoulder, and Silas is working on that one.”

“Okay, I’ll read the rest tomorrow when I come in. Thanks, Connie. Just leave them on my desk.”

Connie stacked the papers in a neat pile in the center of his desk and walked out with her head down. She rarely smiled or talked unless spoken to. He wished he knew why she was so quiet, but he wasn’t going to push her.

Once again, he started for the door and managed to get through it this time without another setback. He said good-night to Jace, one of his other deputies, and headed for his truck. If he hurried, he would get there about the same time as Mason was due home.

He wondered how long Beth had slept after he’d left her on the couch. It had been hard as hell to walk away without riding her until they were both worn out. He knew that she would have welcomed his attentions by the way she had responded to his hands on her body, but he needed to prove to her that it wasn’t all about the sex. It was a big part of it, but not all of it and certainly not the most important piece by far.

He and Mason wanted her as their wife and partner. They wanted to share with her all the joys of a ménage relationship, but she had to want it, too. He wasn’t sure why she was balking, but it had to do with their statuses as Masters, he was sure.
